A Rich History

In 1903 Joseph G. Snow purchased what is today Bangalow Guesthouse, naming it ‘The Rivers’ where he lived with his wife and 13 children. He was a prominent figure in the community, setting up a much-needed sawmill for the town. The J. G. Snow bridge, adjacent to the property was named in his honor in 1948.

Dr Bracken

In 1909 Dr. Andrew Bracken bought the home after arriving from Ireland two years earlier and so began the line of Doctors who would live in ‘The Rivers’ for decades to come. In 1912 the property passed to Scottish born Dr. John Stewart who had been in the Boer War as a Surgeon-Major. He ran his practice from ‘The Rivers’ until he volunteered in WWI.

Dr Lentaigne

Dr. John Lentaigne arrived in 1914, renaming the property ‘Riverview’ after the College he had studied at in Sydney. Trained in obstetrics and paediatrics, Dr. Lentaigne delivered many of the residents of Bangalow and Byron Bay.

Dr. Lentaigne married the daughter of the Bangalow Hotel and they raised their five daughters at ‘Riverview’. Over the years, the family extended the property and Dr. Lentaigne continued to practice and live at ‘Riverview’ until his death at 66 years of age.
